New Social Media Tool
by Jessica High

Everyone is familiar with the social media giants like Twitter or Facebook, but this does not mean these are the only options. Many other networks are growing, and it is important to pay attention to these.

YourCause.com is a good example of this. Unlike the large social media networks, this website is entirely dedicated to philanthropy—connecting donors with charities and vice versa.

Donors can register for free and choose causes they would like to support. The causes they choose then show up on their profile. Using social media ideas, they can invite more people to join the cause and support it. The website shows donors the accumulating donations in order for them to see their impact.

YourCause.com has also just added a volunteer section to their website where charities can list their volunteer opportunities. People can then search through these opportunities, sign up to help, and track how long they volunteer for.

This website continues to grow and is already looking at more developments such as a page that would allow companies to provide employees with lists of volunteer opportunities available, information on matching gifts and grants, and tracking tools for giving.

It may be a newer site, but it has already helped to raise close to $300,000 for nearly 500 charities. The strength of the website is it allows a few people who are passionate about a cause to share it with many others. It’s about the viral effect of social media.
