Maintaining Relationships with Social Media
by Ashley High While some people suggest that the Internet only allows us to collect information, if used correctly, the web can also help maintain more relationships than ever thought possible before. Prior to Web 2.0 (the shift to promoting participation and conversations), “‘well connected’ people where those who had strong ties to all the right people. Today, ‘well connected’ people are those who have extensive loose ties with all the right people.”
It has shown that most people can only maintain strong ties with about 150 people. However, it is important to manage the rest of your “loose ties” in order to benefit from their collective knowledge and skills. Social media is powerful because “it allows us to maintain loose ties at strong enough levels that we’re able to call up those connections and deepen them when needed.
For example, Sean Stannard-Stockton, author of Tactical Philanthropy, writes about how he had limited time in Washington D.C., so he used LinkedIn to discover who he knew in D.C. Then, he was able to meet people from Guidestar, the Gates Foundation, Network for Good, Association of Small Foundations, Hudson Insitute, and several other organizations.
How are you using social media to maintain relationships?
