Giving and Generation X
by Ashley High For many years, fundraisers have complained that Generation Xers (those born between 1965 and 1980) do not give enough money to charity. However, Northern Trust’s annual Wealth in America survey released on September 3rd reported that Generation Xers have the money and the information about nonprofits. And what is more, they gave nearly twice as much as the Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) did. The survey says, “"Gen X millionaire households (ages 28 to 42) gave nearly $20,000 in 2006, compared to Baby Boomers (ages 43 to 61) and Silent Generation millionaires (ages 62 to 77), who gave roughly $10,000."
In 2001, United Way of America did a study that showed Generation X wanted more information about the charities they supported as opposed to the older generations. One of the reasons Gen X millionaire giving has increased in the last several years is due to the availability of online information about nonprofits. Northern Trust employee Marguerite Griffin said, "The abundance of information about nonprofit organizations that can be found on the Internet and the ease of contributing to a charitable cause, or even starting your own global giving initiative online, is a huge convenience for younger generations, who are generally more comfortable with online giving vehicles.” Generation X is generous – charities just need to have their information available and readily accessible.
